2nd Secretary General of the United Nations (1953 - 1961).

Organizer of the first UN peacekeeping operation (in Egypt in 1956).

He is also known as a poet, journalist and essayist.

Member of the Swedish Academy (since 1954).

Laureate of the 1961 Nobel Peace Prize (the prize was awarded posthumously).

Swedish statesman who held various positions in the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Sweden, and later in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
